Wind power project with a capacity of three gigawatts (GW) receives investment of nine billion euros from Germany and Denmark. The wind farm will be situated in the Baltic Sea, and the three gigawatts of power that it generates will be sufficient to power 4.1 million homes. Germany and Denmark’s respective governments are working together in order to find a solution that will allow Europe to reduce its reliance on the natural gas supply that Russia provides.

The development of an offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, which will be known as Bornholm Energy Island, is at stake here. This wind farm will connect numerous other wind farms and distribute the energy that is produced by these two countries. The project will not reach its full production capacity until 2030, at which point it will have a capacity of more than 3 gigawatts (GW), which is enough to supply electricity to 4.1 million homes.

According to the information provided by the Danish Government, the investment will consist of 3,000 million euros for the infrastructure and an additional 6,000 million euros will be added for the offshore wind farm. On the German side, the project will be carried out by 50Hertz, while on the Danish side, the project will be carried out by Energinet. The costs will be split between the two sides. As soon as it is operational, other Baltic countries and Poland will be allowed to join the project, provided that they receive consent from the two current members.

Additionally, the Danish Energy Minister says that he would ensure this is “a beneficial arrangement for taxpayers” and that “it requires a great deal of faith and determination for two countries to embrace a project of this magnitude.” Robert Habeck, his German counterpart, notes that “this is the first time in Europe that two countries work on a project of this nature.”

The European Commission has set a goal of 300 GW of wind energy production capacity by 2050, and this project intends to help them get there. There is only a 12 GW production rate at the moment.
