Resistance training may be more effective than aerobic exercise in improving ZZZs

According to a recent research, resistance training may be preferable than aerobic exercise in terms of improving sleep quality. Resistance exercise increased sleep quality, duration, and other sleep indices more than aerobic exercise, combined aerobic and resistance exercise, and no activity over the course of a year. Resistance exercise programs, according to researchers, may be a strategy to enhance sleep and, as a result, cardiovascular health.

According to preliminary study to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2022, resistance training may be preferable than aerobic exercise for improving sleep, and sleep is crucial for cardiovascular health. The summit will take place in person in Chicago and digitally from Tuesday, March 1 to Friday, March 4, 2022, and will include the most up-to-date population-based knowledge on cardiovascular health promotion and stroke prevention.

“Getting adequate sleep, especially high-quality sleep, is becoming widely recognized as crucial for overall health, including cardiovascular health. Previous study has shown that not getting enough sleep (the recommended amount for people is seven to eight hours per day) or receiving poor quality sleep increases the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis (atherosclerosis occurs when fatty deposits build up in arteries). Sleep deprivation has been related to obesity, diabetes, and inflammation, all of which may exacerbate cardiovascular disease. Oversleeping or undersleeping has also been linked to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and mortality.

Researchers included 386 persons who matched the criterion for being overweight or obese, which included a BMI of 25-40 kg/m2. Participants were sedentary and had high blood pressure, with systolic (top number) readings of 120-139 mm Hg and diastolic (bottom number) readings of 80-89 mm Hg (bottom number). For 12 months, participants were randomized to one of three exercise groups (aerobic alone, resistance only, or mixed aerobic and resistance) or a no-exercise group (for comparison). The exercise groups all met three times a week for supervised 60-minute sessions, with the combination group completing 30 minutes of aerobic and 30 minutes of resistance training.

During each session, aerobic exercise participants may pick between treadmills, upright or recumbent cycles, or ellipticals as their aerobic modality. Researchers kept track of their heart rates to ensure they were within the recommended heart rate range for moderate-to-vigorous activity.

To engage all of the main muscle groups in one session, the resistance exercise group performed sets and repetitions on 12 resistance machines. Leg press, chest press, lat pulldown, leg curl, leg extension, biceps curl, triceps pushdown, shoulder press, ab crunch, lower back extension, torso rotation, and hip abduction were among the equipment available. Three sets of 8 to 16 repetitions at 50-80% of one-rep maximum were done by the participants.

The combination group completed 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity followed by two sets of 8 to 16 repetitions of resistance training on 9 machines rather than 12.

At the beginning and at the end of the study, participants took a range of tests, including the self-reported Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which assesses sleep quality. Sleep duration, sleep efficiency (the amount of time spent sleeping divided by the total amount of time spent in bed), sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep after getting into bed), and sleep disturbances were also measured (how frequently sleep is disturbed by things like being too hot or too cold, snoring or coughing, having to use the bathroom or having pain). Lower PSQI ratings imply higher sleep quality, with 0 indicating the greatest sleep and 21 indicating the worst possible sleep. “Poor quality sleep” is defined as a score of five or above.

According to the findings of the study:

At the start of the trial, more than a third of the individuals (35%) reported poor sleep quality.

Sleep duration increased by an average of 40 minutes for the resistance exercise group in 12 months, compared to an increase of about 23 minutes for the aerobic exercise group, about 17 minutes for the combined exercise group, and about 15 minutes for the control group, among the 42 percent of participants who did not get at least 7 hours of sleep at the start of the study.

The resistance training and combination exercise groups improved their sleep efficiency, whereas the aerobic exercise and no exercise groups did not.

The group allocated to resistance training only had a small reduction in sleep latency of 3 minutes, with no significant changes in latency in the other participant groups.

All groups, including the non-exercising group, had some improvement in sleep quality and sleep disruptions.

Based on these results, resistance exercise programs might be a novel strategy to promote improved sleep and cardiovascular health.

“While both aerobic and resistance training are beneficial to general health,” Brellenthin said, “our findings show that resistance workouts may be preferable when it comes to obtaining better ZZZs at night.” “Resistance training enhanced sleep duration and efficiency, which are important indices of sleep quality because they represent how well a person falls asleep and remains asleep all night. Consider integrating two or more resistance exercise training sessions into your normal exercise regimen to enhance your overall muscle and bone health, as well as your sleep, if your sleep has been notably poorer over the last two stressful years.”

The researchers used a self-reported sleep questionnaire to measure sleep rather than objectively monitoring sleep, which is a study drawback.
